A Walk in the Forest

Duration: 1h15

Just past the village of Bonnieux, 6 km away, the Cedar Forest offers several marked trails for all levels, lasting about 1 to 1.5 hours. Follow the discovery trail through one of Europe’s most beautiful centuries-old cedar groves! Along the path, information stations about the typical plant species of the Luberon provide delightful breaks under the song of birds and the air scented with thyme and honeysuckle.

Designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, the Luberon is a true haven of untouched nature. While vineyards and cherry orchards flourish on the hillsides, lavender and forests dominate the higher grounds.

Le conseil du Prieuré Bring a small blanket, very handy for resting on a patch of grass.

The Ochres

Duration: 1h

Wander through the multicolored labyrinth that is the Ochre Trail and be transported into the fantastical world of the Provençal Colorado. According to legend, heartbroken, the beautiful Sirmonde threw herself from the cliffs, and her blood stained the land red. Various educational panels are located along the two proposed routes (30 minutes or 1h).

Le conseil du Prieuré Prepare €4.50 for parking and entrance fees.

Gordes

Perched on the side of a rock, Gordes boasts a breathtaking view over valleys of olive trees. Begin a stroll between the Renaissance and the Middle Ages in the heart of a small town center that forms a labyrinth of stone.
A village celebrated by artists such as painter Marc Chagall, Victor Vasarely,… It is a must-visit cultural stop in Provence.

Le conseil du Prieuré You will encounter numerous mills along the way; take a break. You will be greeted by passionate locals, with a possible tasting of olive oil and tapenade!

Ménerbes

Rocky spur overlooking scrublands and vineyards

Ménerbes has everything it takes to be one of the most beautiful villages in France: a row of plane trees, a covered washhouse, gravel alleys, hollyhocks, and mansions made of blond stone… This rocky spur overlooking the scrublands and vineyards of the Luberon, the village and its castle watch over their neighbors Gordes and Roussillon. Inside, the streets also reveal a rich heritage: a fortress guarded by two stone lions, a unique dolmen in Provence, ancient dwellings… Like many villages in the Luberon, Ménerbes has charmed several famous artists such as Nicolas de Staël, Picasso who had his residence here…

Le conseil du Prieuré Visit the village on foot, Ménerbes is timeless.
At the end of your day, sip a glass of organic cherry juice on a terrace, one of the specialties, accompanied by a few orange blossom navettes.

Roussillon

The Ochres

The beauty of Roussillon comes from its land soaked with ochre and red oxides. The plasters of the houses reflect this fiery palette. Stroll through the stone and stairway alleys of the old town. On your way, you’ll find vaulted passages, remains of ramparts, beautiful 17th-century facades…

Did you know? In the past, Roussillon’s ochres were used in making chocolate and lipstick…

Le conseil du Prieuré Do not miss the Conservatory of Ochres and Color, a wonderful summary of the ochre’s heyday and its trades in a pleasant and authentic setting / Self-guided or guided tours - Free parking.

Oppède-le-Vieux

Village abandoned by men

Accessible only on foot, this village built on a rocky bar has been abandoned by men and reclaimed by nature. Accessible only on foot, this village built on a rocky bar has been abandoned by men and reclaimed by nature. A legend lingers, suggesting that Antipope Benedict XIII once soared from here, aided by the devil!

Le conseil du Prieuré The climb to the village is steep, so wear your best walking shoes. However, the shade is one of the charms of this delightful village! Don’t stop at the bottom; at the very top, a magnificent medieval church, Notre Dame, awaits you, along with a panoramic view overlooking the entire valley with Mont Ventoux in the background.
